Fifteen US states, including Massachusetts and New York, have agreed to drop opposition to the bankruptcy organization plan of Purdue Pharma, the maker of OxyContin, paving the way for the embattled drug company to wriggle itself out of corporate rabbit hole, Jan Hoffman reported for the New York Times.

By dropping their opposition to OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma’s bankruptcy reorganization plan, the 15 states will receive millions of documents from the company and an additional $50 million from members of the Sackler family.

Purdue Pharma had been blamed universally for the skyrocketing of opioid addiction and the 15 states sued the company for engaging in underhanded tactics to promote the use of OxyContin by patients, including encouraging doctors to issue more prescriptions to intensify the use of the drug.

With their opposition to the bankruptcy reorganization plan of Purdue Pharma out of the way, the company can buy precious time to work on how to pay the settlement and satisfy the demands of creditors.
