The biggest sports sale in US history is moving forward, as a group led by investor Bill Chisholm and private equity firm Sixth Street has agreed to buy the NBA’s Boston Celtics for $6.1 billion, Forbes Daily reported.

The price of sports franchises has skyrocketed over the past two decades. In 2024, Forbes ranked the Celtics as the fourth-most valuable NBA franchise, although the team’s outgoing owner admitted last year that it was “losing money”.

The Boston Celtics hold the record for the most NBA championships, with 18 titles, followed by: the Los Angeles Lakers – 17, Golden State Warriors – 7, Chicago Bulls – 6, and San Antonio Spurs – 5.

Currently, the most valuable NBA franchise is the Golden State Warriors.
