6.2 TREMOR HITS SARANGANI, DAVAO ORIENTAL WEDNESDAY

A magnitude 6.2 earthquake jolted Sarangani, Davao Occidental on Wednesday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

The tectonic quake struck 86 km. southeast of the municipality at 7:21 a.m., with a depth of 16 km. Intensity V was felt in General Santos City and South Cotabato, and Intensity IV in Kiamba, Alabel, Maasim, Glan, Malungon, and Malapatan in Sarangani; Lebak, Sultan Kudarat; Datu Blah Sinsuat, Maguindanao; and Koronadal City, Polomolok, Tampakan, and Tupi in South Cotabato.


Intensity III was felt in Maitum, Sarangani; Cotabato City, Maguindanao; Davao City; Kidapawan City, North Cotabato; and Tantangan and Santo Niño in South Cotabato. Intensity II was reported in Columbio, Sultan Kudarat; Tacurong City, Sultan Kudarat; and Magpet, North Cotabato, while Intensity I was felt in Zamboanga City.


The following instrumental intensities were also reported:


Intensity V in Gen. Santos City, South Cotabato; Intensity IV in Kiamba, Sarangani; Tupi, South Cotabato; and Koronadal City, South Cotabato; and Intensity III in Kidapawan City, North Cotabato; Alabel, Sarangani; and Kidapawan City, North Cotabato


Reported intensity is the traditional way of knowing the intensity based on reports by people who felt the earthquake while instrumental intensity is measured using an intensity meter that measures ground acceleration, Phivolcs director Renato Solidum, Jr. has said.


Both aftershocks and damage are expected from the magnitude 6.2 quake, according to Phivolcs.
