Despite ongoing headlines about auto tariffs, electric vehicle (EV) mandates, and potential cuts to EV tax credits, Americans remain interested in electric vehicles—just not necessarily those from Tesla, Pras Subramanian reported for Yahoo Finance.

As more EV models enter the market, consumer behavior is shifting.
J.D. Power’s latest EV consideration study found that 24% of car shoppers said they are "very likely" to consider buying an EV, and 35% said they are "somewhat likely." These figures remain largely unchanged from a year ago.
The firm surveyed 8,164 consumers from January through April who plan to buy or lease a new vehicle within the next 12 months.
“Despite the market volatility, EVs have found solid ground for consumer consideration,” said Brent Gruber, J.D. Power’s executive director of EV practice, in a statement.
As more EV models enter the market, consumer behavior is shifting. On average, buyers are cross-shopping 2.9 EV brands, compared to just two brands when shopping for gas-powered vehicles.
And they’re increasingly exploring EVs outside the Tesla lineup.
According to J.D. Power, the top five brands cross-shopped by consumers interested in the Tesla Model Y SUV are: Honda, Ford, BMW, Toyota, and Cadillac, in that order.
