Andy Burnham met with Labour Party colleagues as he prepared for a leadership contest in which he could emerge as the sole candidate to replace Prime Minister Keir Starmer, The Associated Press (AP) reported.

Burnham, who recently returned to Parliament after serving as mayor of Greater Manchester since 2017, is considered the leading contender to succeed Starmer.
Starmer announced Monday that he intends to step down within weeks after two years as prime minister.
Burnham's prospects strengthened after former Health Secretary Wes Streeting, previously viewed as his strongest potential rival, announced his support.
Under Britain's parliamentary system, the governing party can replace its leader—and therefore the prime minister—without holding a general election.
The next nationwide election is not required until 2029.
Labour leadership nominations are scheduled to open on July 9 and close one week later.
If Burnham is the only candidate, he could become prime minister by July 17. If the contest is contested, the winner is expected to take office before Parliament returns from its summer recess on Sept. 1.
