Anthropic Wins Legal Battle as Judge Blocks Pentagon Blacklisting

US District Judge Rita Lin of the Northern District of California largely sided with Anthropic in its lawsuit against the administration, finding that the government's actions violated the law and that the designation was an unlawful retaliation against the company.

Reuters reported that Lin found the Pentagon's designation of Anthropic as a supply-chain risk was arbitrary and capricious and violated the company's constitutional rights.

The dispute followed Anthropic's disagreements with the Pentagon over how its Claude AI models could be used by the US government.

Anthropic had objected to the use of its technology for fully autonomous lethal weapons and domestic mass surveillance.

In a 59-page ruling, Lin wrote that “the empty invocation of national security is not a blank check to punish and retaliate against government critics,” according to Reuters.

The judge ordered the government to halt enforcement of the measures related to the supply-chain-risk designation. The ruling represents a significant setback for the Pentagon's effort to exclude Anthropic from government-related business
