Asian Shares Fall Amid Market Concerns Over U.S.-China Trade War

Asian shares declined on Tuesday as concerns over U.S.-China trade tensions weighed on the market outlook for the region.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index dropped 0.6% to 23,196.33, while the Shanghai Composite Index edged 0.1% lower to 3,368.24.
Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 fell 1.1% to 38,336.73 after Japan’s markets reopened following a holiday on Monday, Elaine Kurtenbach reported for the Associated Press (AP). In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng dropped 0.6% to 23,196.33, while the Shanghai Composite Index edged 0.1% lower to 3,368.24.
Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 declined 0.7% to 8,252.50. South Korea’s Kospi lost 0.3% to 2,637.45 after the Bank of Korea cut its benchmark interest rate to 2.75% from 3%, marking its third cut in four meetings as it attempts to support the slowing economy.
Taiwan’s Taiex fell 1%, while India’s Sensex gained 0.4%.
On Monday, former U.S. President Donald Trump stated that tariff hikes on imports from Canada and Mexico would proceed after a one-month delay.
Trump has openly antagonized numerous U.S. trading partners in recent months, threatening to increase tariffs and prompting retaliatory import taxes that could escalate into a full-scale trade war.
