Australia AUKUS Submarine Deal Review Initiated

A former Australian minister is set to lead a crowd-funded review of the AUKUS submarine agreement, one of the country’s largest defense projects, Lana Lam reported for BBC News.

Peter Garrett, who served as environment minister from 2007 to 2010, described the inquiry into the A$368 billion ($239 billion) program as “long overdue.”

Garrett said the initiative aims to restore public debate over a project he claims has moved beyond parliamentary oversight. The review will include public hearings, with a final report expected in October.

The commission will also include former officials such as Admiral Chris Barrie and former Western Australia premier Carmen Lawrence. Supporters include independent lawmakers, retired defense personnel, and policy advocates.

The inquiry is being organized by the Australian Peace and Security Forum, a nonprofit group.
