Bell Family Builds $2 Billion Fortune from "The Young and the Restless" and "The Bold and the Beautiful"

In 1966, NBC's Days of our Lives was reportedly facing cancellation when producers brought in William Bell, a veteran soap-opera writer who had already established himself in daytime television.

Within four years, Bell had helped move the show into the ranks of the top daytime serials.
The success was only the beginning of what would become a soap-opera empire.
Bell and his wife, Lee Phillip Bell, created The Young and the Restless in 1973 and The Bold and the Beautiful in 1987. William Bell died in 2005 and Lee died in 2020, but their three children continued the family's involvement with the shows.
According to Forbes, the Bell family has accumulated a combined net worth of about $2 billion, making it the first billion-dollar fortune built from soap operas, based on the publication's estimates.
Much of the family's financial success is attributed to Bill Bell Jr., the couple's eldest son, who was nicknamed “Dollar Bill” and managed business affairs for the family's production companies for decades.
Bell Jr. helped negotiate lucrative arrangements involving The Young and the Restless and secured ownership and international distribution arrangements for The Bold and the Beautiful.
Forbes estimates his personal fortune at about $1.1 billion.
His brother Brad Bell has been head writer of The Bold and the Beautiful for more than 30 years, while sister Lauralee Bell has played Christine Blair, also known as “Cricket,” on The Young and the Restless since the 1980s.
The two shows remain among the most prominent American daytime soaps, while The Bold and the Beautiful continues to have a substantial international audience.
