The Swedish Academy, upon announcing the award, praised Carson for her bold and inventive writing, which engages playfully with the classical tradition while creating new forms for contemporary literature.

Carson, 76, is known for challenging conventional boundaries between literary genres and bringing ancient texts and ideas into conversation with modern life.

Her work has earned her international recognition and established her as one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary literature.

Carson reacted with surprise and humor when informed of the award.

In an interview with Iceland’s public broadcaster RÚV, she joked that the judges were “crazy” to have selected her.

Ingrid Carlberg, permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy, said she delivered the news to Carson by telephone shortly before the public announcement. Carson was in Iceland at the time, Carlberg said, adding that the writer appeared surprised and happy.

The Nobel Prize in Literature recognizes an author’s overall body of work rather than a single book. The 2026 award carries a prize of 11 million Swedish kronor, in line with the Nobel Foundation’s current award amount.

The exact amount and its conversion into pounds or U.S. dollars should be checked against the official Nobel announcement before publication.
