Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s reported last-minute decision to cancel the deployment of 4,000 U.S. troops to Poland caught Pentagon officials and European allies by surprise, according to a Politico report by Paul McLeary and Jack Detsch.

According to three defense officials familiar with the matter, it remains unclear why Hegseth issued the order.
President Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed frustration with some European allies over burden-sharing related to the Iran conflict, though he has previously described Poland as a “model ally” because of its defense spending.
The reported reversal was notable because troops and military equipment had already begun arriving in Poland, raising concerns among European capitals and within the Pentagon over potential security implications and perceptions by Russia.
“We had no idea this was coming,” one U.S. official told Politico, adding that American and European officials spent the following day trying to understand the decision and determine whether additional policy shifts could follow.
The move followed Hegseth’s earlier announcement this month that the Pentagon would withdraw 5,000 troops from Germany, reportedly after tensions between Washington and Berlin over the Iran conflict.
