Carney Rebukes Trump Officials Over Claims About Canada-US Trade Talks

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has pushed back against recent comments by senior US officials challenging Canada's explanation for the collapse of trade talks last month.

"I don't think, with all respect, appointed, unelected cabinet members in the United States are experts on Canadian politics," Carney said at a news conference in Thunder Bay, Ontario, according to Canadian Press and Reuters reports.

After Carney pulled Canada's negotiating team back to Ottawa on Friday, Aug. 21, he and Canada's chief trade negotiator, Janice Charette, said the United States had introduced last-minute changes that Ottawa considered unacceptable.

Carney has said the US proposals could have constrained Canada's ability to negotiate trade agreements with other countries and affected Canadian language and cultural protections.

He has also argued that the proposals could have weakened the Canadian auto industry over time.

"There are a few issues that the US was arguing up to the last hour: red lines, we're not going to change, boom it's in there. You know, our way or the highway, take it or leave it attitude. Now they're not," Carney said.

The remarks came after US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent criticized Canada's handling of the negotiations and suggested domestic political considerations had contributed to the breakdown.

Lutnick has claimed that Canada introduced changes at the last minute for political reasons.

The dispute has also spilled into social media. Trump has promoted the unofficial name "Lake America" for Lake Ontario, while Bessent and US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy have made comments mocking Canada's military capabilities.

Carney has described some of the rhetoric from senior US officials as inappropriate, while maintaining that Canada remains willing to negotiate a trade agreement that benefits both countries.
