Later in the week, investors were set to focus on earnings from Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL) and Tesla (TSLA).

Together with Intel (INTC), the companies are expected to provide important updates on artificial intelligence spending as investors continue to debate the sustainability of massive capital expenditures for AI infrastructure.

Overall, the earnings season is shaping up to be a strong one for the S&P 500.

According to FactSet, analysts expect second-quarter earnings for S&P 500 companies to grow 24.7% year over year, well above the five-year average of 16.4% and the 10-year average of 10.3%.

If those estimates hold, it would mark the second consecutive quarter of earnings growth exceeding 20% and the seventh straight quarter of double-digit earnings growth for the index.
