CHINA SAYS IT WANTS PEACEFUL REUNIFICATION WITH TAIWAN
The head of China’s Taiwan Affairs Office told Reuters on Friday, May 29, 2020, that the “one country, two systems” formula applied in Hong Kong and “peaceful reunification” are the best way to bring China and Taiwan together.
Outside attempts by foreign forces to interfere in “reunification” will fail, Liu Jieyi told an event at the Great Hall of the People marking 15 years since China signed into law its Anti-Secession Law.
Beijing passed the law in 2005 which authorizes the use of force against Taiwan if China judges it to have seceded.
Chinese generals also regularly threaten military action across the Taiwan Strait if Taipei declares itself to be a separate republic, which President Tsai Ing-wen says it is, and strengthens its already formidable military forces given its low population.
