Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi privately told the European Union’s top diplomat that Beijing cannot accept Russia losing its war against Ukraine, as that outcome could allow the U.S. to shift its full strategic focus to China, CNN’s Nick Paton Walsh reported, citing an official briefed on the talks.

The statement came during a four-hour meeting in Brussels with EU foreign affairs chief Kaja Kallas, which featured “tough but respectful exchanges” on a broad range of issues, including cybersecurity, rare earths, trade imbalances, Taiwan, and the Middle East.

Wang’s comments suggested that Beijing might prefer a prolonged war in Ukraine to keep U.S. attention divided, despite China’s public stance of neutrality.

Last week, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning reiterated the official line: “China is not a party to the Ukraine issue. China’s position on the Ukraine crisis is objective and consistent — that is, negotiation, ceasefire, and peace. A prolonged Ukraine crisis serves no one’s interests.”

As reported by The Telegraph’s Allegra Mendelson, there are signs President Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth are pivoting U.S. defense priorities toward the Indo-Pacific, with countering China now a top strategic focus.

While China has repeatedly claimed it is not supplying weapons to Russia, reports have emerged suggesting otherwise, including evidence that it delivered a laser defense system to Moscow.

Following the meeting, Chinese state media emphasized that Beijing “consistently advocates for peace talks to resolve the Ukraine crisis” and welcomed “efforts by all parties to reach a comprehensive, lasting, and binding peace agreement.”
