Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie slammed the Department of Justice’s efforts to prosecute President Trump’s political enemies, saying the common phrase that grand juries would indict a ham sandwich is being proven false by the administration, Elliott Davis reported for The Hill.

“They’re putting a bunch of ham sandwiches up there, and the grand juries are not indicting them,” Christie said on ABC’s “This Week.”

“The fact is that previous Justice Departments, before this one, took very seriously bringing charges to a grand jury and asking it to indict a fellow American,” Christie added.

“What you’re seeing now is absolutely the destruction of the credibility of the Justice Department.”

Grand juries in Norfolk and Alexandria, Va., declined to reindict New York Attorney General Letitia James (D) after a judge threw out the initial prosecution over the unlawful appointment of the U.S. attorney who pursued it, Lindsey Halligan.

A case against former FBI Director James Comey was also dismissed for the same reason.

Christie, who served as chair of Trump’s transition team in 2016 but has been a frequent critic of the president in the years since, was referring to a federal grand jury in Washington, D.C., that recently refused to indict six Democratic lawmakers who participated in a November video calling on service members to reject “illegal orders.”

Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.), one of the video’s participants, noted, “It was a grand jury of anonymous American citizens who upheld the rule of law and determined this case should not proceed.”

Christie argued: “The damage that gets done here by this pure vendetta prosecution is long-term. And it’s going to be very, very difficult to fix over the course of the next decade.”
