Former Rep. Colin Allred has unseated Rep. Julie Johnson in a Democratic primary runoff, NBC News projected, after he dropped out of the Texas Senate race last year and launched a campaign for a House seat reshaped by redistricting, Owen Auston-Babcock reported for NBC News.

The primary for Texas’s deeply Democratic 33rd District in the Dallas area became competitive after Allred exited the Senate race and chose instead to run for the House.
He finished ahead of Johnson in the first round with 44% to 33%, triggering a runoff after no candidate secured a majority.
Allred also received support from attorney Zeeshan Hafeez and business owner Carlos Quintanilla, who finished behind the top two candidates in the initial primary.
Johnson had previously replaced Allred in another district when he first ran for Senate in 2024, where he ultimately lost to Republican Sen. Ted Cruz. The matchup between Allred and Johnson created an unusual dynamic in the district’s Democratic politics.
