Sonowal posted on X: “It is deeply unfortunate to learn of the tragic incident aboard the Palau-flagged MT Settebello. Sadly, three Indian seafarers initially reported missing are now confirmed dead after bodies have been located and identified.”

The sailors were identified by local media as Aditya Sharma, Shivanand Chaurasiya and Patnala Suresh, with Sharma’s grandfather telling the Press Trust of India (PTI):

“We want to know the full truth of what happened. … Our hearts are shattered.”

Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal told reporters the US Navy had attacked three ships with Indian crews this week.

“These attacks must cease and end,” he said. “We also call for dialogue and diplomacy so that we can have an early return to peace and stability in the region.”

An Indian government source on Wednesday told Reuters that New Delhi had summoned the US deputy chief of mission after lodging a “strong protest” over the strike.
