COVID-19 Cases Rise Across US as Summer Surge Gains Momentum

More people across the United States are coming down with COVID-19 as summer draws to a close.

COVID-19 infections are increasing across much of the United States as summer comes to an end, according to health officials and experts.

According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data cited by HuffPost, COVID-19 infections were increasing or likely increasing in all 50 states, Jillian Wilson reported for HuffPost.

“Overall, put together in the U.S., the trend does seem to be going up,” said Dr. Geeta Sood, an infectious-disease physician and epidemiologist at Johns Hopkins Medicine.

CDC data showed that infections were increasing most in the South and West, although cases were also rising in other parts of the country.

Experts said the current levels remained relatively low compared with the previous year. Dr. Sood noted that late-summer increases have become relatively common in recent years.

COVID-19 can experience seasonal increases, with experts expecting activity to rise again as the country moves into fall and winter.

Dr. Michael Angarone, an infectious-disease specialist at Northwestern Medicine, said the overall number of cases and the burden of SARS-CoV-2 remained relatively low but could increase during the fall and early winter.

Common symptoms include a runny nose, congestion, sore throat and fever. More severe infections can cause coughing, difficulty breathing and shortness of breath.
