CREC Projects Gain National Significance Status

Citicore Renewable Energy Corporation (CREC) has received Certificates of Energy Projects of National Significance (CEPNS) for thirteen of its renewable energy initiatives.

These projects, with a combined capacity of approximately 800 megawatts (MW), have been recognized by the Department of Energy (DOE) as critical to the nation’s energy security and sustainable development.

The DOE presented the CEPNS to CREC’s projects under the Green Energy Auction Program 2 (GEAP-2), held in July 2023. Comprising 430 MW of ground-mounted solar and 362 MW of onshore wind developments, these projects span eight provinces: Pangasinan, Bataan, Pampanga, Batangas, Quezon, Camarines Sur, Iloilo, and Negros Occidental.

This recognition underscores the DOE’s commitment to accelerating the growth of renewable energy, as these certifications aim to streamline regulatory processes and facilitate the swift completion of key energy projects.

Oliver Tan, President and CEO of CREC, expressed gratitude to the DOE for acknowledging the critical role of renewable energy in the country’s energy strategy.

“The recognition of our projects highlights the government’s support for timely and efficient completion of RE projects, which often face challenges in securing permits and clearances,” Tan stated.

The certifications are part of CREC’s broader objective to build 5 gigawatts of clean energy capacity over the next five years.

Beyond its national impact, CREC is setting a precedent with its innovative solar farm model, which integrates agricultural activities with renewable energy generation. Unlike traditional solar farms that monopolize land, CREC’s approach allows solar panels to coexist with high-value crops.

This model not only maximizes land use but also provides additional income streams for farmers, addressing concerns of agricultural displacement often associated with solar farm developments.

CREC has pioneered this disruptive approach by marrying technology with traditional agriculture, reflecting a new paradigm in sustainable business practices. The solar farms' integration with agriculture is part of CREC's commitment to community development and environmental stewardship.

This innovation has already gained international attention, as it presents a scalable solution for balancing energy production with food security—a model other countries could emulate.

As CREC advances its renewable energy projects, it remains dedicated to aligning its strategies with the country's clean energy goals. With its forward-thinking approach, CREC is not only transforming the renewable energy landscape but also setting a benchmark for socially responsible and sustainable business practices in the Philippines.
