The growing impact of data centers on local communities is fueling opposition to artificial intelligence, with concerns ranging from air pollution and electricity costs to greenhouse-gas emissions.

Last year, Elon Musk's Colossus data center in South Memphis became the focus of environmental protests over air-quality concerns. Demonstrators have continued to raise concerns about emissions from the facility's gas-powered turbines.
The impact of data centers on nearby communities is not the only factor driving criticism of AI, but rising electricity demand and environmental concerns have become increasingly prominent issues.
One analysis found that gas-power projects associated with 11 US data-center campuses could potentially produce more than 129 million tons of greenhouse-gas emissions annually, based on figures in air-permit filings.
The projects are associated with companies including Microsoft, xAI, Meta and OpenAI.
The figures represent potential permitted emissions, however, rather than necessarily the amount that will actually be emitted.
Public skepticism toward AI has also appeared in other settings. University commencement speakers have faced criticism and booing while discussing AI, while an analysis of Steam games found that games disclosing AI use received 53 percent fewer reviews on average and tended to receive more negative reviews.
The examples underscore the growing debate over the social and environmental costs of the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure.
