The contest between the physician and the Republican businessman was considered highly competitive throughout the campaign.

It drew national attention in late October after Ramaswamy’s campaign released a controversial advertisement featuring Acton’s estranged mother.

Ramaswamy initially defended the advertisement, but the campaign eventually pulled it following bipartisan criticism. The controversy added to the scrutiny surrounding the final weeks of the race, as Acton gained momentum.

Democrat Amy Acton defeated Republican Vivek Ramaswamy to become Ohio’s first Democratic governor in 20 years and the first woman elected to the state’s top office.
