Democratic lawmakers have blasted President Trump over comments expressing a desire to “drive housing prices up” for homeowners, with one congresswoman telling followers that the president “doesn’t care about making your life more affordable,” Elliott Davis reported for The Hill.

During a Cabinet meeting earlier in the day, Trump said he wants to keep homeowners “wealthy.” The remarks sparked immediate backlash from Democrats in both chambers of Congress.

“Are you trying to buy your first home? Trump wants your prices to go up,” Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) wrote on X.

“But sure, Donald—keep saying affordability is a hoax.”

Rep. Jason Crow (D-Colo.) also criticized the president, writing, “Millions of hardworking folks can’t afford to buy—and the president’s tariffs are making it even more expensive.”

Rep. Suzan DelBene (D-Wash.) added in her own post: “Millions of families are struggling to afford a roof over their heads & Trump’s response is to increase the price of housing. He doesn’t care about making your life more affordable.”

Housing prices have surged in recent years, outpacing overall inflation. The median sale price of a home in December stood at $429,000—more than 28% higher than in December 2020—according to data compiled by Redfin.

Trump has attempted to address housing market pressures.

Earlier this week, he issued an executive order aimed at curbing Wall Street investors from buying single-family homes, arguing that such investors have acquired a “growing share” of those properties.

“Trump’s affordable housing plan is basically: Screw you,” Rep. Darren Soto (D-Fla.) wrote on X while sharing a video of the president’s remarks. “This will float like a lead balloon in fast-growing Central Florida.”
