The United Auto Workers (UAW) and the Detroit Three automakers had a final full day on Thursday, September 21, 2023, to make significant progress on a new contract before the union planned to announce an expansion of its US strikes, as reported by Hyunjoo Jin for Reuters.

The standoff is raising concerns about prolonged industrial action that could disrupt production and have a ripple effect throughout the supply chain, potentially denting US economic growth.
Last week, the UAW initiated unprecedented simultaneous strikes at one assembly plant each of General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler parent Stellantis.

UAW President Shawn Fain said in a video released late on Monday that he would announce an expansion of the strikes at 12 p.m. EDT on Friday (1600 GMT), unless there was "serious progress" in talks. "We're not waiting around. And we're not messing around," he said at the time.
