The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, has launched an audit of NASA’s spending and contracts, focusing on the $93 billion Artemis project.

The Artemis program, originally established under Donald Trump to facilitate a lunar landing, has only flown one mission since its inception and has postponed its first crewed lunar landing to 2027. Hannah Collymore reported for Cryptopolitan.

The Artemis program has faced heavy criticism from multiple sources, including Elon Musk himself, despite SpaceX’s key role in the initiative.

SpaceX holds a multibillion-dollar contract to build a lunar lander for Artemis, raising concerns over a conflict of interest as Musk leads the audit.

Musk is expected to encounter strong resistance from Trump’s political appointees, as DOGE’s investigation could disrupt NASA’s lunar program through discussions with the Office of Management and Budget (OMB).

Ultimately, the decision on Artemis funding rests with Congress, which has exclusive authority over changes to specific programs. Senator Ted Cruz has announced plans to reintroduce a NASA authorization bill “very soon”, which would prohibit changes to Artemis for at least a year.

However, given the new administration, the bill’s fate remains uncertain.

The Artemis program supports tens of thousands of jobs in Texas, Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida. Musk has previously criticized the initiative, calling it “extremely inefficient” and a “jobs-maximizing program, not a results-maximizing program.”

Despite its delays and cost overruns, Congress has consistently funneled billions of dollars into the program, recognizing its economic importance to local communities.
