"It's time to book your holiday to Italy," Draghi said at a press conference following an online meeting of G20 tourism ministers hosted by Rome and aimed at kick-starting international travel, Deutsche Presse-Agentur [dpa] reported.

Italy, which currently holds the presidency of the G20 group of industrialized and emerging economies, and other tourism-minded southern European nations are keen to normalize travel again during the all-important summer holiday season.

Draghi said that the EU's digital vaccine passports were on track to be fully operational by the "second half of June."

The scheme allows member states to recognize citizens' proof of vaccination, therefore allowing easy cross-border travel in the bloc. Vaccinations, tests and COVID-19 recoveries could all be stored in the document.

"In the short term, the task now is to restore confidence in safe travel," the German government's tourism commissioner, Thomas Bareiss, said in a statement.
