EU countries approved a €6 billion plan to support Western Balkan states, aimed at accelerating reforms and economic growth in the region as they pursue future EU membership, according to the Associated Press (AP).

Albania, Bosnia, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Serbia are at varying stages in their EU membership applications.

The plan, covering 2024 to 2027, is expected to provide up to €2 billion in grants and €4 billion in loans, contingent on reforms aligning Western Balkan economies with EU rules.

The aid will support socio-economic and fundamental reforms, including those related to the rule of law and fundamental rights.

Albania, Bosnia, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Serbia are at varying stages in their EU membership applications, with residents expressing frustration over the slow process. Croatia was the last country to join the EU in 2013.
