Expanding Data Centers Could Drive Higher Carbon Emissions, Critics Warn

The rapid expansion of data centers supporting artificial intelligence and cloud computing could significantly increase carbon emissions if energy demand continues to rely heavily on fossil fuels, environmental advocates warn, Colby Groves reported for Counterpunch.

Researchers and environmental groups say many new data centers are expected to depend on natural gas-powered electricity generation, which contributes both carbon dioxide emissions and methane leakage.
Methane, while shorter-lived than carbon dioxide, is considered particularly potent in trapping heat in the atmosphere over shorter time horizons.
Some recent studies suggest that emissions linked to large-scale AI-powered infrastructure projects could substantially increase corporate carbon footprints, particularly when fossil fuel-based electricity is used.
Other projections estimate that data centers could consume a growing share of global electricity demand by the end of the decade, potentially accounting for a significant rise in emissions unless renewable energy deployment accelerates.
Supporters of AI infrastructure argue that technological efficiencies and clean-energy transitions could offset some of the environmental costs.
