A three-star Navy rear admiral who was dismissed by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth during a purge of senior military leaders last year has won the Democratic primary in a closely watched South Carolina congressional race, The Guardian reported.

Nancy Lacore secured the Democratic nomination for South Carolina's 1st Congressional District after defeating US Coast Guard veteran Mac Deford in Tuesday's runoff election.
Lacore will now face Republican nominee Jenny Costa Honeycutt, a Charleston County council member, in November as Democrats seek to flip the traditionally Republican district.
The seat is currently held by Republican Nancy Mace, who opted to run for governor of South Carolina rather than seek re-election to Congress.
Lacore was among dozens of senior military officers dismissed during Hegseth's restructuring of the armed forces, which targeted officials viewed as having fallen out of favor with the Trump administration or who did not align with the defense secretary's vision for military leadership.
