The prosecution alleged that Hernández conspired with drug cartels during his presidency, allowing more than 400 tons of cocaine to pass through Honduras en route to the US.
In return, Hernández allegedly received millions of dollars in bribes, which he used to bolster his political career in Honduras.
Hernández, who served as president from 2014 to 2022, was extradited to the US in 2022 after the completion of his second term in office.
He faces multiple charges, including conspiracy to import cocaine into the US, conspiracy to possess firearms and destructive devices for drug trafficking, and possession of such weapons during the drug trafficking conspiracy.
Each charge carries a maximum sentence of life in prison.
