Leaders of some of the world’s biggest economic powers arrived in the Canadian Rockies for a Group of Seven (G7) summit, overshadowed by an escalating conflict between Israel and Iran and U.S. President Donald Trump’s unresolved trade war, Rob Gillies and Jill Lawless reported for the Associated Press (AP).

Israel’s strikes on Iran and Tehran’s retaliation—actions that appeared to catch many world leaders off guard—are the latest signs of an increasingly volatile world.
Trump recently vetoed an Israeli plan to assassinate Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, a U.S. official told AP, highlighting how far Israel was prepared to go.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he had discussed efforts to de-escalate the crisis with Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as well as with other world leaders. He added that he expected “intense discussions” to continue at the summit.
As summit host, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has decided to abandon the annual practice of issuing a joint communique at the conclusion of the meeting.
With other leaders eager to dissuade Trump from imposing new tariffs, the summit risks becoming a series of bilateral conversations rather than a unified show of global leadership.
