Leaders and anti-nuclear activists gathered in New York City to review the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), amid growing geopolitical tensions, Kyodo News reported.

A key issue is whether participating countries can agree on a consensus document, as previous review conferences in 2015 and 2022 ended without one.
The discussions come at a time of heightened global uncertainty, including conflicts in Ukraine and tensions in the Middle East, raising concerns about nuclear proliferation.
Delegations from Japan include survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, who are advocating for nuclear disarmament and raising awareness of the humanitarian impact of nuclear weapons.
