The partnership aligns with the Japan Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications' (MIC) 2024 program, FY2024 Contract for Conducting Demonstration Experiments in Preparation for Open RAN Field Trial in the Philippines.

Japan is among the countries actively supporting the rollout of Open RAN, an open radio access network that enables interoperability between equipment and systems from multiple vendors.

Open RAN fosters innovation and optimization by allowing diverse suppliers to contribute to network development, enhancing scalability and cost efficiency.

Through the demonstration experiment, Globe will assess the feasibility and performance of Open RAN solutions and understand how they integrate with its existing network infrastructure.

This initiative will provide Globe with critical insights into Open RAN’s potential role in future network expansion.

“The demand for connectivity continues to grow as digital transformation accelerates,” said Joel Agustin, Globe’s Head of Service Planning and Engineering. “As an innovation leader, Globe is taking a key step forward in exploring Open RAN, which is already in use in other tech-forward countries.”

Agustin emphasized that Globe’s participation in the project is centered on gaining deeper insights into Open RAN’s potential alignment with the company's future needs.

By engaging in this demonstration, Globe aims to contribute to the global discussion on Open RAN, leveraging trial outcomes to inform decisions on network evolution and infrastructure planning.

Sadayuki Abeta, Chief Technology Officer at OREX SAI and Chief Open RAN Strategist at NTT DOCOMO, commented,

“We have successfully evaluated Open RAN performance in various Southeast Asian countries and are delighted to collaborate with Globe Telecom in the Philippines. By leveraging cutting-edge Open RAN technology, we aim to contribute to Globe’s innovation and success by delivering flexible, scalable, and cost-effective connectivity solutions to meet evolving consumer and community needs.”
