GREEK COURT RULES RIGHTIST GOLDEN PARTY IS A CRIMINAL ENTERPRISE
A Greek court ruled that the extreme far-right Golden Dawn party, once represented in parliament, was run as a criminal enterprise that terrorized foreigners, migrants, political opponents and any other perceived foe.
"This is a big day for democracy," said Greek President Ekaterini Sakellaropoulou, a former judge. "Extreme political violence has no part in the old democratic tradition of our country," the Greek leader told Deutsche Presse-Agentur (dpa.)
Conservative Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said that the "fight against racism and hate for those who think differently continues. "It is up to us to ensure that democracy wins day-by-day," he added.
The verdict sparked applause from thousands of people outside the court who rallied to protest against fascism. On the margins of the rally, a group of protesters started rioting, prompting police to fire tear gas, quickly dispersing them. The authorities had deployed some 2,000 police ahead of the verdict's delivery.
