During the exchange, Hegseth criticized sections of the media, describing some reporting as “unpatriotic” and expressing concern over unauthorized disclosures of sensitive information.

He was asked about a report involving a U.S. Army official, identified as Andrew Hug, who allegedly shared classified information.

Hegseth responded that the individual would no longer remain in his position and emphasized the department’s stance on leaks.

“We take leaking very seriously here, informally or formally,” Hegseth said. “Some of the reporting done by people in this room is incredibly problematic.”

Hegseth also addressed a separate report that the Pentagon had briefed Congress on a possible timeline of up to six months to clear mines in the Strait of Hormuz.

“We would not speculate on a timeline,” he said, adding that the report appeared to rely on information from a closed-door session. He reiterated that the U.S. is confident in its ability to address threats in the area and noted that coordination with international partners may be part of such efforts.
