Hollywood has seen plenty of disruption over the past generation with the rise of streaming, but the proposed Paramount-Warner Bros. merger has faced significant opposition from entertainment industry professionals concerned about jobs and opportunities for creators, Luke Juricic reported for Investing.com.

More than 2,000 actors, directors, producers, writers and other Hollywood professionals signed an open letter opposing the deal earlier this year.

Critics warned that the merger could lead to fewer opportunities for creators, fewer jobs across the production ecosystem, higher costs and less choice for audiences.

The settlement reached between Paramount and a coalition of 12 states has addressed some of the concerns surrounding the transaction.

Under the agreement, the combined company must release at least 30 theatrical films a year during its first two years, followed by at least 32 films annually for the next three years.

It must also spend at least an additional $1.5 billion on domestic film production over five years.

The agreement further requires the company to keep both the Paramount and Warner Bros. studio lots open for at least five years.

The settlement includes other provisions intended to protect workers and competition as the companies integrate.

The business logic for mergers typically includes anticipated synergies and cost savings, but the Paramount-Warner Bros. deal has faced opposition from some creators and industry groups concerned that consolidation could reduce employment and creative opportunities.
