Honduran President Xiomara Castro has threatened to end her country's military cooperation with the United States if President-elect Donald Trump follows through on his promise of mass deportations, Marlon Gonzalez reported this for the Associated Press.

In a New Year’s Day speech broadcast on national television, Castro declared that any large-scale expulsions of Hondurans would force her government to reconsider its policies toward the U.S., particularly in the military domain.

“Faced with a hostile attitude of mass expulsion of our brothers, we would have to consider changing our cooperation policies with the U.S., especially in the military realm,” Castro said.

She also noted that the U.S. had maintained a presence in Honduras for decades without financial contributions and argued that such a presence would lose its justification if Hondurans were expelled en masse.

While Castro expressed hope for dialogue with the incoming Trump administration, her remarks have sparked political debate at home. The U.S. government has so far remained silent on the issue.
