China’s Huawei Technologies is preparing to test its most powerful artificial intelligence (AI) chip yet, aiming to replace high-end products from U.S. chip giant Nvidia, The Wall Street Journal reported.

Huawei has approached several Chinese tech companies to test the technical capabilities of the new chip, known as the Ascend 910D, according to sources cited in the report.
The company hopes this latest iteration of its Ascend AI processors will surpass Nvidia’s H100.
Huawei is expected to receive the first batch of 910D samples as early as late May, Reuters also reported. Reuters added that Huawei plans to begin mass shipments of its advanced 910C AI chip to Chinese customers as early as next month.
Huawei and its Chinese counterparts have long struggled to match Nvidia’s performance in top-tier chips used for training AI models — a process in which algorithms learn from large datasets.
Washington, seeking to limit China’s technological and military development, has barred Chinese access to Nvidia’s most advanced AI products, including the flagship B200 chip.
