A federal investigation involving Representative Ilhan Omar has drawn criticism from Democratic officials and intensified political tensions ahead of the US midterm elections, with Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison accusing the Trump administration of politically targeting the congresswoman, Jason Easley reported for PoliticusUSA.

Ellison made the remarks during an interview with Reverend Al Sharpton on Politics Nation, aired by MS NOW. He said the investigation raised serious concerns about the use of federal law enforcement against a prominent critic of President Donald Trump.

“It is as troubling as it gets,” Ellison said, describing the investigation as political persecution linked to Omar’s criticism of Trump, her Somali background and her status as an immigrant.

Ellison also warned that the investigation could intimidate people from immigrant communities who fear they might face similar scrutiny.

He said, however, that the controversy had motivated some Minnesota residents to become more active in political campaigning and voter outreach.

“Our sister Ilhan will be strong and stand up to this. We will stand by her,” Ellison said.

Federal agents searched Omar’s Washington, D.C., home on October 12 as part of an ongoing investigation.

Reports citing court records and people familiar with the matter said the inquiry concerns allegations involving immigration and naturalization paperwork. Omar has denied wrongdoing and characterized the investigation as politically motivated.

The Department of Justice has not publicly detailed all aspects of the investigation.

No criminal charge against Omar had been announced in the reporting reviewed for this article.

The timing of the investigation has attracted particular attention because the November midterm elections are approaching.

Critics argue that high-profile investigative actions involving an elected official so close to an election risk creating the perception that law enforcement is being used for political purposes.

The administration’s actions have also prompted broader debate about safeguards intended to keep federal investigations separate from electoral politics.

Supporters of the investigation, however, would need to establish that the inquiry is justified by evidence rather than political considerations.

The investigation remains ongoing, and allegations should not be treated as proven unless supported by evidence and established through the appropriate legal process.
