Iran Launches 300 Drones, Missiles vs Israel

Booms and air raid sirens sounded across Israel early Sunday after Iran launched hundreds of drones, ballistic missiles, and cruise missiles in an unprecedented revenge mission that pushed the Middle East closer to a regionwide war.

A military spokesman said the launches numbered more than 300 but bragged 99% of them were intercepted, Josef Federman and Jon Gambrell reported for the Associated Press (AP).

Iran says it will not hesitate to take further “defensive measures” to protect its interests against any military aggression, the Iranian foreign ministry says in a statement, Reuters reported.

“Iran, if necessary, will not hesitate to take further defensive measures to safeguard its legitimate interests against any military aggressions and unlawful use of force,” it says, according to state TV, “while reaffirming its commitment to the principles of the United Nations Charter and international law.”

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres says he strongly condemns the serious escalation represented by the large-scale attack launched on Israel by Iran and called for an immediate cessation of these hostilities, Jacob Magid reported for The Times of Israel.

“I am deeply alarmed about the very real danger of a devastating region-wide escalation. I urge all parties to exercise maximum restraint to avoid any action that could lead to major military confrontations on multiple fronts in the Middle East. I have repeatedly stressed that neither the region nor the world can afford another war.”
