Iran Says Strait of Hormuz Will Remain Closed Until U.S. Meets Conditions

Iran will not reopen the Strait of Hormuz until its conditions are met and U.S. commitments are implemented, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said, according to Iran's semi-official Fars news agency.

Ghalibaf said Iran must both fight and negotiate, arguing that Tehran would use military action to push back against its adversaries while using diplomacy to consolidate what it considers gains on the battlefield.

“Our messages have been conveyed and our conditions have been clearly explained to the other side through mediators,” Ghalibaf said, according to Fars.

He said Iran would not return to the previous framework for negotiations or reopen the Strait of Hormuz until what Tehran considers the legitimate rights of the Iranian people are recognized and the United States fulfills its commitments.

Ghalibaf also said what he described as the previous U.S.-led regional order had collapsed and called for a new regional order involving Islamic countries.

The comments came as diplomatic efforts continued alongside military tensions between Iran and the United States.

Iran's position, as described by Ghalibaf, links the reopening of the strategic waterway to broader negotiations and U.S. actions.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical route for global energy shipments, making any prolonged disruption potentially significant for oil markets, shipping and the wider global economy.
