ISRAEL SAYS US ARMS SALE TO UAE NOT A PRECONDITION FOR NORMAL TIES

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has denied allegations that a US sale of F-35 fighter jets to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) had been a precondition by the Gulf state for a normalization of ties with Israel.

Israel agreed to the sale only after it signed the normalization deal with the UAE, Netanyahu told a televised news conference from Jerusalem, Deutsche Presse-Agentur (dpa) reported.

"Only yesterday did we give our approval for this sale," Netanyahu said in response to a question. "It's just not true. There was no such precondition," he said.

In return for a US pledge to upgrade Israel's military capability and maintain its qualitative military edge, Israel said on Friday that it would not oppose the US' sale of a weapons systems to the UAE, Netanyahu's office and that of Defense Minister Benny Gantz said in a statement.
