Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said she does not believe the United States would resort to military force to seize control of Greenland, urging instead a stronger NATO role in the Arctic to address U.S. security concerns, Giada Zampano reported for the Associated Press (AP).

Speaking at a New Year press conference, Meloni said military action would not be in anyone’s interest and would have serious consequences for NATO.
“I still don’t believe in the possibility of the U.S. initiating military action to take control of Greenland,” she said, adding Italy would not support such a move.
The White House said it is weighing “options” that could include military action regarding the strategically located, mineral-rich island, which is a semi-autonomous territory of NATO ally Denmark.
Meloni said the Trump administration’s rhetoric was aimed at highlighting the strategic importance of Greenland and the Arctic. “It’s an area where many foreign actors operate,” she said, adding that the U.S. wants to deter outside powers from gaining influence.
