Japan’s Maritime Self-Defense Force (MSDF) Aegis destroyer Chokai has become the country’s first vessel capable of carrying and launching U.S.-made Tomahawk missiles, significantly expanding its strike capabilities, Japan Times reported.

Japan’s Defense Ministry said the ship had successfully completed modifications in the United States to deploy the long-range “standoff” missiles. Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi said the upgrade would help deter potential attacks.

Tomahawk missiles, which have a range of about 1,600 kilometers according to the U.S. Navy, are currently being used in strikes on Iran. Japan agreed to purchase 400 of the missiles in January 2024.

The MSDF plans to equip all eight of its Aegis destroyers with Tomahawks, integrating them into existing Mk-41 vertical launch systems.
