Sanae Takaichi pledged to strengthen Japan’s defense capabilities by updating key security policy documents later this year, Kyodo News reported.

Speaking at the first meeting of an expert panel tasked with revising defense policies, Takaichi emphasized the need to prepare for “new forms of warfare,” including those involving artificial intelligence and advanced technologies.
The meeting also addressed economic security and funding requirements as Japan faces growing regional challenges, particularly from China and North Korea.
Japan aims to raise defense spending and related costs to 2% of GDP by fiscal 2027, in line with increasing expectations from allies, including the United States.
The panel’s discussions will contribute to revisions of the country’s National Security Strategy and other key defense documents, with Cabinet approval targeted by year-end.
