Late last week President Donald Trump indicated that he had encouraged Zacharia to reconsider remaining in the high-profile role. Several news organizations subsequently reported that she was leaving the position.
The New York Times, citing three people familiar with the matter, reported that Trump had fired Zacharia.
A senior White House official told Fox News that she was transitioning out of the role, while CBS News, Politico and The Washington Post also reported on her departure.
Trump told reporters outside the White House that he and Zacharia were discussing her future in the position.
“We're talking about doing something,” he said, adding that he had urged her to reconsider whether she wanted to continue in the job. Trump said he believed Zacharia might be happier outside the demanding role, which had exposed her to intense media scrutiny.
“I think you're better off being happy and I don't think you could ever be happy in this job,” he said, recounting his conversation with her.
Asked whether he intended to fire her, Trump said no.
He added that he did not want her to continue enduring the criticism she had faced in her first days as the administration's chief spokesperson.
The controversy followed Zacharia's first White House press briefing and television interviews, during which questions arose about her professional background and claims concerning her legal qualifications.
Zacharia subsequently confirmed her departure in a post on X late Friday, thanking Trump and describing it as an honor to have worked for him.
Her five-day tenure made her the shortest-serving White House press secretary in the position's history, according to contemporaneous reports. The abrupt departure left the administration facing a search for a replacement at a politically sensitive time ahead of the US midterm elections.
