A US senator has called for impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump following reports that he texted Norway’s prime minister with threats to take over Greenland after failing to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, Sharon Zhang reported for Truthout.

Over the weekend, Trump sent a text message to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre stating that he “no longer feel[s] an obligation to think purely of peace” because the Nobel Committee awarded the Peace Prize to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado—who later regifted her Nobel Prize to Trump.

On Monday, citing reports tying Trump’s Greenland ambitions to his Nobel snub, Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) wrote, “Invoke the 25th Amendment.”

Markey is among several Democrats calling for Trump’s impeachment, citing what they describe as a long pattern of illegal and corrupt behavior since he returned to the White House.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) also condemned Trump’s reasoning, calling it “pathetic” and urging Republicans to support efforts to bar Trump from attacking or attempting to seize Greenland. Trump has not ruled out using military force.

“The US cannot base foreign policy on whether or not a president gets a prize,” Sanders wrote on X.

“This is pathetic. It is petty and dangerous narcissism—behavior we might expect from a spoiled child, not the leader of a democratic nation.”

Shortly after midnight Tuesday, Trump posted an image on Truth Social depicting Canada, Greenland, and Venezuela as part of the United States. Danish officials responded with a satirical video showing Trump planting a US flag in Greenland before being mauled by polar bears.
