A top Belarus lawmaker has condemned the Seimas, the Lithuanian parliament, for issuing a resolution recognizing Svetlana Tikhanovskaya as the genuinely elected leader of the country.

Andrei Savinykh, chairman of the International Affairs Commission of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus, accused his Lithuanian counterparts of mounting an unceremonious attempt to interfere into domestic affairs of Belarus, the Belarus news agency BelTA reported.

“We have to state with regret that the resolution of the Seimas of Lithuania as of 10 September is an unceremonious and awkward attempt to intervene in the domestic affairs of Belarus. It is another testimony to the clumsy efforts of the Lithuanian side to give seriousness and meaning to their political actions,” Savinykh said.

He noted that the Lithuanian MPs who voted for this decision demonstrated utmost disregard for the principles of good neighborliness, common sense and parliamentary ethics. “More than that, by doing this they undermine trust in all the proposals of external mediation laying bare their real, not declarative goals,” he noted.
