Outgoing Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) offered his take on the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021 and slammed defeated President Donald Trump for provoking the angry mob that stormed the federal building, Meaghan Ellis reported for Alternet.

On Tuesday, January 19, McConnell gave a speech at the Senate and said: "The last time the Senate convened, we had just reclaimed the Capitol from violent criminals who tried to stop Congress from doing our duty. The mob was fed lies. They were provoked by the president and other powerful people."
The New York Times also noted McConnell’s blast was in stark contrast to his dogged defense of Trump in the past four years, claiming it was some kind of a kick in the butt for a defeated president whose approval rating was down in the pits at 29%.
Reporting for CNN, Alex Rogers and Clare Foran said early on January 20 that it is the first time that McConnell broke from Trump in his four years as president. “But he led the Senate's certification of the presidential election that the rioters pledged to overturn, and has strongly condemned the violence at the Capitol he has served in as a senator for 36 years,’ they added.
