The Manuel V. Pangilinan-led Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has secured commitments from two of the Philippines' leading glass manufacturing companies—Pioneer Float Glass Manufacturing, Inc. and Anglo Watsons Glass, Inc. (AWGI).
Pioneer Float Glass Manufacturing Inc. and Anglo Watsons Glass, Inc. have committed to Meralco’s Interruptible Load Program (ILP), contributing a total de-loading capacity of 4.3 MW to help stabilize the Luzon Grid during peak demand periods.
These commitments will enhance the Interruptible Load Program (ILP), aimed at stabilizing the Luzon Grid during periods of high electricity demand.
“These commitments reflect our shared dedication to alleviating strain on the power grid, ultimately benefiting thousands of small businesses and households by minimizing rotational power interruptions,” said Ma. Cecilia M. Domingo, Meralco Vice President and Head of Enterprise and National Government.
The ILP, a demand-side management program, calls on large-load customers to use their generator sets or reduce their operations instead of drawing power from the grid during Red Alerts. This helps to prevent power interruptions for households.
In response to Meralco’s proactive efforts, Pioneer Float Glass, the country's largest float glass manufacturer, is set to sign an agreement contributing an additional two-megawatt (MW) de-loading capacity from its manufacturing plant in Pinagbuhatan, Pasig City.
This move follows Pioneer Float Glass's proactive participation during the Red Alerts in April, where it voluntarily de-loaded 1.5 MW without compensation, playing a crucial role in preventing rotational power interruptions.
As an industry leader, Pioneer Float Glass continues to demonstrate its commitment to energy management and community cooperation, embodying the spirit of bayanihan.
Similarly, Anglo Watsons Glass has responded to Meralco's call for more ILP participants. Although final enrollment is pending, AWGI voluntarily de-loaded 1.3 MW during the Red Alert on May 28, 2024.
Once fully enrolled, AWGI will contribute a total of 2.3 MW of de-loading capacity from its facility in Calamba, Laguna.
This commitment is part of Meralco's broader initiative to engage key industries, including the Glass Manufacturers Association of the Philippines Inc. (GMAPI), of which AWGI is a member.
Meralco's intensified campaign, in response to a directive from the Department of Energy, aims to boost the ILP's capacity. Currently, over 100 companies with more than 500 MW de-loading capacity are enrolled in the ILP within Meralco's franchise area.
